Women only – Day Skipper / Competent Crew

Who is it for?

The Women only – Day Skipper / Competent Crew course is designed to either introduce you to sailing or to build on your existing sailing experience and obtain the RYA Day Skipper license.
The course will be crewed only by women and will be run by a female instructor!

Minimum requirements

RYA Competent Crew:

None

RYA Day Skipper:

– Minimum age: 16 years old
– 100 miles on a yacht as an active crew member
– 5 days onboard
Please note: these are the minimum requirements from the RYA, however, our experience tells us that more sailing experience than listed above is needed to successfully obtain the license!

What do you get?

In a mostly male sailing environment, some women may end up either feeling frustrated or, even worse, intimidated by the prevalent, more ‘male-oriented’ approach. This often results in a decrease in self-confidence, a tendency to retreat to more elementary tasks or just follow instructions, to the detriment of one’s own learning and enjoyment.
Whether to satisfy a personal dream, to kick off your sailing career, or simply to be able to actively contribute to the running of a yacht, this women-only course is designed to provide a supportive, encouraging, and friendly atmosphere where you can learn at your own pace.
Run by a female instructor and with a female-only crew, you will spend the week building your skills and confidence to perform all maneuvres autonomously.
By the end of the week, you will:

Women only Day Skipper / Competent Crew – Program

You will practice all the fundamentals manoeuvres of running a sailing yacht. Hoisting and dousing sails, reefing, tacking and gybing, anchoring and picking up a buoy. You will also practice how to navigate in the traditional way, using lighthouses and conspicuous points to fix your position on the chart, by day and by night. Mooring and leaving a pontoon under engine will also be practised extensively.
You will be in charge of the manoeuvre to recover a man overboard and plan and execute a night time sailing passage of at least four hours.
You will spend the week aboard the yacht, visiting many beautiful bays and harbours in Croatia.

With a maximum of 5 students per yacht, your instructor can devote plenty of time to your needs and focus the program on the areas you need most.

IMPORTANT! If you are planning to take the Day Skipper license, please note that in order to be able to charter or sail a yacht at sea, you will also need to have the SRC Marine Radio license.
You can book our online course HERE, then take the exam at our training centre in Croatia

Exam

There is no formal exam to obtain either the Competent Crew or the Day Skipper certificates. The instructor will follow your progress during the week and provide you with regular feedback in what is called ‘continuous assessment’. You will define and adapt an action plan to cover any gaps. At the end of the week, there will be a final one-to-one debrief, by which point the outcome should not be a surprise to anyone.

If successful, you will then be awarded the RYA Competent Crew or Day Skipper Certificate!
